If you are still reading, let me tell you a story
about ice tea.
Yes, ice tea.
It's summer here in the northern hemisphere
and I don't know what it's like where you live
but it is as hot as heck in the Hudson Valley.
Over 90 F degrees with high humidity.
I don't know how much ice tea is consumed
worldwide, but I'm sure it's a lot.
In the US, you'd be hard pressed to find a
single restaurant that doesn't have it
on the menu and many people drink it
by the gallon.
So where did ice tea come from?
it's one of those things that seems to
have always been around.
Well, it hasn't been.
In fact, the story is that it's only a little more
than 100 years old.
While surely individuals were making
ice tea and home and at public events
it was the 1904 World's Fair that put
ice tea on the map.
William Blechyndon, a tea merchant,
brought tea to the Fair to give away
as samples to promote his business.
The weather at the Fair was unusually
hot and the American audience had
no interest in the free samples.
Big trouble.
So what did he do?
He gathered ice, threw it in the tea
and gave THAT away instead.
Big hit.
"ice tea" became one of the sensations
of the Fair (that and an Egyptian fan
dancer...but that's another story.)
It seems obvious now, but I guarantee
there was a moment there where everything
seemed lost.
It might have been a lot longer than a moment.
In fact, if Blechyndon - and how the heck do you
pronounce that? - had not kept his mind open
and been flexible and resourceful, it could
have easily been a terminal isaster for his company.
So what's the lesson?
it's this...
THINKING is the most important skill in
business and marketing.
Bags of tricks learned from someone
else can help, but the real "do or die"
moments in business come when you're
confronted with the unexpected.
A lot of businesses are going to be
headed into "do or die" territory
in the coming years.
That's not negative. It's just a fact.
I've been warning my System Club
members since 2005 to stay far away
from any business ventures that
require cheap fuel and/or cheap
credit to work.
it's going to get "worse" before it gets
better.
I put "worse" in quote because it will
only be worse for business owners
who lack "ice tea"-level resourcefulness.
And that's what the System Intensive
it all about.
Learning how to think through and solve
business problems - no matter how daunting.
it's the hardest thing in the world to teach
which is why no one even tries to teach
it - except me.
You see there's a reason why so many
people have come out of the System Seminar
and been so successful (more so than any
other seminar - or ten seminars - combined.)
We don't just pile attendees with facts and
"how to." That's easy to do.
We also show people how to confront and
overcome marketing problems.
In the System Intensive, I shine a laser
beam on this skill and take it even further
than what we do at the System Seminar.
So, if you can get to the UK in the fall,
I strongly recommend you take a look
at this.
it's the only time I'm offering it anywhere
in the world in 2008 and it's not clear
that I'll ever offer it again.
