Short and Long Term Gains Different tax rates apply depending on whether you held an investment for a year or less (short-term) or for more than a year (long-term). As a result, you'll keep to keep track of when you bought and sold your investments so you or your accountant can calculate how much tax is due.   Capital Gain Tax Rates Long-term gains on investments are taxed at zero percent or 15%, depending on which tax bracket you are in.
