Everyone has their own way of preparing for tax time. Mine is to enter all the tax documents I receive into my software as soon as I receive it, and then file that piece of paper away in a folder somewhere.

Another recommendation is to make a checklist of all the documents you expect to receive. That way you'll know when all your documents have arrived in the mail.

California to Delay Income Tax Refunds
Some disturbing news from California: the state will delay tax refunds as part of an effort to prevent a cash flow crisis. Will other states follow suit? I don't know. But taxpayers may want to file early before the state entirely runs out of money. As for me, I've decided to let the state keep my refund. It might not help the state, but it will help me reduce my estimated taxes for next year.

 
TaxACT Review
I've spent the weekend using various free tax preparation programs, and here's my first review. TaxACT Standard offers preparation and e-filing of a federal return. The paid, Deluxe version adds extra help and guidance. But for now I can only recommend the Windows-compatible download, as the online version didn't calculate one tax credit correctly.
