Red Hot Communications, Inc. | | Hi johns, This weekend my hubby John and I decided to take a romantic excursion to the seaside community of Santa Barbara. It's a gorgeous town with an artsy flair. Our plan was just to have some good seafood and do a little local shopping. Unfortunately two things got in our way. One was the unseasonably high winds and cold whipping off the ocean. The other was the college basketball tournaments. See I graduated from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill which has one of the most enviable basketball legacies of all time. You simply can't go to school there and NOT become a basketball fan. Some of the legends to come out of UNC were Michael Jordan ('member him?), James Worthy, Sam Perkins, Vince Carter, Matt Doherty, and Rick Fox among dozens of others. So every March during the playoffs, I dust off my light-colored 'Carolina blue' apparel and become a stark-raving Tar Heel again. Even John (who could care less about sports other times of the year) bleeds Carolina blue in March. So we spent our 'romantic weekend' in sports bars cheering our lungs out for the Tar Heels. (They won their regional championship, by the way.) But more importantly, who do you think bought the piles of Carolina sweatshirts, t-shirts, mugs, and stickers we own? ME!! And it's not because I'm the alumni. It's because I'm the woman and we are STATISTICALLY PROVEN to be much more likely to buy sports apparel than men! Let's look at football. Even though the professional football league fan base is made up of only 40% women, they buy 80% of the merchandise. Crazy, isn't it? The fact is, even in markets you THINK are mostly male-dominated, it's the female making the buying decisions! Women also buy: => 66% of all small consumer electronics; => 65% of all new car purchases; => 20% more new homes than men; => And the list goes on! The bottom line is women make the majority of the buying decisions REGARDLESS OF THE INDUSTRY!
