The unemployment rate increased to 6.1% in August and payroll employment dropped by 84,000 jobs. This is the highest unemployment rate since September 2003.

Payroll employment has fallen by 650,000 this year, or an average of 76,000 jobs per month. This means that, not only are you are more at risk for losing your job, but there is more competition for available jobs.
