Talk about timing.
The System will be in Chicago this weekend, just a
few days after one of the most amazing elections in
American history.
As always after every election, some people are happy
and others are not so happy.
If your guy won, congratulations. You must be
ecstatic.
But regardless of how you FEEL, it's back-to-work-time
and here's why:
Regardless of what they said or implied
neither candidate has the capacity to "fix" the
economy, let alone do anything about your personal economy.
So let's get beyond any opinions about the outcome to extract
the lessons for our businesses...because nobody is ever
going to take care of you as well as you are going to take care
of you.
But first, regardless of your politics, let's give credit
where it's due.
Just one year ago today...
What odds would you have given to a black man
with the middle name Hussein of winning the 2008
US presidential campaign?
How about zero?
Yet he did it...
And he did it through superior messaging and organizing...
And with no rich daddy like John Kennedy or George Bush
had to help pave the way.
Whatever you think about his politics, it's an accomplishment
of epic proportions. My hat's off to the man.
Now, here's your million dollar question:
How did he do it?

Actually, it's not a total coincidence we're
in Chicago this week.
I've always liked this city and in recent years we've
held as many of our System seminars and conferences
here as possible.
It's a down-to-earth place, focused squarely on business
and getting things done with a very low hype quotient.
I've never quite understood the fashion of having
business seminars in places like Las Vegas and
Orlando, recreation centers and gambling centers.
What kind of a message does that send?
Then again, there are a lot of things I don't understand
about the direction seminar givers have taken in
recent years.
Seminars as social events...seminars as opportunities
to party...seminars as celebrity worship sessions...seminars
designed solely to pitch $10,000 and up "coaching"
programs...
I don't get it.
I'm all for having a good time, and if someone really
needs to have the Internet equivalent of Paris Hilton to
idolize, fine, but how about focusing on what a business
seminar is supposed to be all about:
* creating new businesses
* growing existing businesses
The fact that the System Seminar has focused on these
two things and these two things exclusively may explain
a simple fact:
